Transgender woman to compete in Miss Maine USA, a first for the pageant

In just a few weeks, women from across the state will be competing for the title of Miss Maine USA.Miss Monson USA, Isabelle St. Cyr, is the first transgender woman to participate in the pageant. “Starting pageants at 24 feels a bit like starting cheerleading when I was 14. Everyone around me had been doing this since they were kids. There is so much to learn and so much to discover. But never for a moment has it made me feel like I can’t do this,” St. Cyr wrote in a March 25 Facebook post. “When I started cheerleading I had all the odds stacked against me. So much pushback, so many people telling me it wasn’t a space for me. But I fought for what I loved and I ended up being a very successful cheerleader, winning state and national titles and inspiring people to join even if they hadn’t been doing it their whole life. I sense a similar trajectory in my ongoing journey with pageants. I believe I have everything it takes to be Miss Maine USA and I know that no amount of experience can match a true passion and drive to accomplish something.”In a phone call with Maine’s Total Coverage on Tuesday morning, St. Cyr said she entered the pageant before President Donald Trump’s inauguration and before the topic of transgender athletes became an issue in Maine.St. Cyr owns Blossom Farmstand in Monson and said she is looking forward to using her platform to share her story.The Miss Maine USA and Miss Maine Teen USA pageants will be held the weekend of May 10-11 in Portland.Related content:
